The Winged Monkeys

The Winged Monkeys are a race of chimera that basically are simians with feathered wings. They are not limited to chimps. There are even winged gorillas and the current ruler of the Winged Monkeys is an orangutan. Originally, the Winged Monkeys were a happy peace loving prankster race. One day, they pulled one prank too many and angered a powerful sorcerer. It was this sorcerer that cursed the Winged Monkeys by creating the magic Monkey Cap, a treasure that allowed the wearer to control the monkey's thoughts and actions. From that point on, as the cap was passed from sorcerer to sorcerer, the monkeys were passed from master to master, unable to even think of rebellion.

But that dark time in their history has long passed. The Winged Monkeys that now populate Oz have little of their trickster heritage left. When the Monkey Cap found its way into the hands of the first Wicked Witch of the West, she used Winged Monkeys as an army to enslave the Winkies in Winkie Country. The Monkeys did not enjoy this task at all. They may have been tricksters, but they were not murderers. When Dorothy defeated the Witch and took the Monkey Cap, she used it to aid her in reaching Glinda the Good in the South. She was the first owner of the Monkey Cap to not abuse its powers, and for that, the Monkeys were eternally grateful. When Dorothy reached Glinda, she gave the cap to them, and they were finally free. For the first time in longer than most of them could remember. They vowed as a race to never be slaves again. They would have destroyed the cap, but they are magically prohibited against doing so. They now use the cap as a symbol of their independence, and a reminder of thier history. Every Winged Monkey knows that someday the cap could fall into other wrong hands again, and it this reason that motivates their rigorous warrior training.

They have become one of the noblest races in Oz. They have a strict sense of Honor based around the freedom of the individual. The have a central King who is allowed to keeps the cap and is simply known as The Monkey King. Although he has never used the abilities of the Monkey Cap, the Winged Monkeys all respect word as law. The current Monkey King has worked hard to return Winged Monkey culture to what it once was, as he, like all the Winged Monkeys, has the blood of the trickster in him. But like all great fools, the games he plays are to hide his great wisdom. Many people who have visited the Winged Monkey rookeries have greatly underestimated him. Ironheart was one of these. The Winged Monkeys have successfully defended their rookeries against Ironheart's forces. Their nests lie in the mountains in a of Northeast Oz, where Munchkin Country meets Quadling Country. The rocky mountain terrain makes travel difficult for the cog soldiers. The Spider Flyers are the main threat to the Winged Monkeys, and Ironheart is planning on designing a new model specifically for combat with the Winged Monkeys.

The Winged Moneys have been breeding new and stronger types of their race. They have succeeded in breeding an exceedingly strong Winged Gorilla. These monkeys are actually too large to fly, and have small stunted wings. Their lack of being able to fly gives them a social stigma among the other monkeys, as flight has always been a symbol of freedom.

Winged Monkeywrencher (Monkey)

Winged Monkeywrenchers are a new type of Winged Monkey that has begun to emerge. They are more curiuos than your normal Winged Moneky and smarter. They have realized that perhaps a better way to fight Ironheart is to learn about Cogs and what makes them work. They are outcasts from Winged Monkey society for dabbling in Cog Machinery which is not tolerated by the Monkey King. They ambush cog patrols destroy the cogs and then take them apart and build new equipment with the leftovers. Currently Ironheart is not aware of the Monkeywrenchers activities. When he does he will either attempt to eradicate them or turn them to his side. Most Monkeywrenchers carry a few tools on them and a few gadgets they've cooked up. They obviously get along with Nockers very well.
